Michael Curtin (Celbridge) elected to European Small Team of SYM

By Michael Curtin

SYM General Assembly, Lyon ( 16th- 18th November 2012)

I was delighted to have been given the opportunity to represent the Salesian community in Ireland at the 8th Annual General Assembly of the Salesian Youth Movement in Europe, held at the Cenre Jean Bosco in Lyon. This weekend gave me the opportunity to meet other young Salesian volunteers, animators and co-operators from all across Europe. This helped me gain an insight into the volunteer programmes in other countries, as well as the work done by the Salesian congregation in each particular country.

The assembly opened on the morning of Saturday, 17th of November, it began by assessing the role played by SYM in Europe and tracing its history from foundation until the present day. Overall much of the day was taken up with various presentations from members of the small team, mainly a summary of the work done by them over the last three years. This culminated in all members splitting up into their particular regions, with an aim to discussing the problems as well as the opportunities that existed in the region. This ended with the nomination of new members of the small team for a three year term.

I was nominated as the second representative from the northern region along with Elisabeth Humer from Austria. The northern region was given two delegates as it is the region that is deemed to be in need of greater development and support. My election to the small team gives me the privilege to represent Ireland at the highest level of SYM for the next three years, as well as giving me the opportunity to help SYM become aware of the work being done throughout Ireland by the Salesian family, this is important as it shows the volunteer structure in Ireland is alive and well and that this is a result of the work being done by all involved with the Salesians in Ireland.

As well as meetings we also had the opportunity to visit the relics of St. Don Bosco at Fourvoire Cathedral in Lyon, this was a fantastic experience and the mass was celebrated by Luc Van Loy, the Salesian bishop of Ghent. The chance to visit the relics was a fitting end to what was a long day, and this gave us all the opportunity to reflect on the work of Don Bosco.

The Sunday morning saw the closing of the assembly, I met with the new members of the Small team, we agreed to meet in Rome in June, with the view of planning the general assembly for next November. I want to thank Fr. Paddy Hennessy & Fr. John Campion for their help and support to me in arranging the trip to Lyon as well as for all their help throughout. I also want to thank the Salesian community in Celbridge for all their support and help.
