Pope explains real meaning of Advent

1 dicembre 2010

The Pope celebrated the first Sunday of Advent during the Angelus prayer. While we wait for Christmas to arrive, the Pope took this idea to heart and spoke about the theme of “waiting” throughout our lifetime.

Ever the theologian and professor, Pope Benedict XVI, dedicated the Angelus to explain Advent, the four week period that prepares Catholics for Christmas. In a hoarse voice due to a mild cold, the Pope explained that these weeks are characterized by anticipation of an important event.

Benedict XVI
For example, a married couple expecting a child; that of a relative or friend that comes to visit from far away; or awaiting the results of an important test. You could say that being human is about living while waiting, and while hope is kept alive in the heart.”
According to the Pope, man’s existence is measured by his expectations.  In light of this, he asked Catholics to examine their aspirations and what they expect in life.  He noted that only God can fill the biggest illusions of the individual.
From his window, the Pope could see the Nativity scene being built in St. Peter’s Square. The world’s most visited Nativity will be ready on December 24.
