Pope to Youth: Man finds peace in God

11 ottobre 2010

In an atmosphere of great joy and high spirits, Benedict XVI met a group of young people at Sulmona cathedral on Sunday. The Pope – showing the affection of a father with his children – said that the heart of man does not find peace if not in God, “the pearl of great price” that gives value to life. But he observed the clouds gathering on the horizons of young people today aren’t few in number: “Concrete problems that make it difficult to look ahead with confidence and optimism, but also illusory, false values and models that promise a full life but leave it empty instead”. “The current culture of consumerism,” the Pope insisted, “tends to flatten man today, making him lose a sense of the past, of history, and in doing so depriving him of the ability to understand himself, to perceive problems, and to build a future.” The pontiff urged young people to be silent in the face of the world’s noise in order to hear God’s voice, the “guarantor of truth,” who is “Friend, Father and Brother”. A prayer is not divorced from reality, the Pope added, but able to defend a person from “the blunders” of pride and presumption, “from fashion and from conformity,” giving “the strength to be truly free, even from certain temptations disguised as good things.” Benedict XVI: “Faith and prayer can not solve problems but they allow one to deal with life in a new light and with new strength, in a manner worthy of man, and also in a way that is more peaceful and effective.”
